28nm graphics process to arrive in late 2011

More than a year from now
For both Nvidia and ATI, it will take more than a year to see the first high performance graphics chips in 28nm shipping to customers.

The reason is quite obvious. Both major fab players, TSMC and Global Foundries, will need time to get the 28nm process to where they want it. TSMC wants to be extra careful with 28nm and its 40nm was all but easy and lack of 40nm chips in Q4 2009 and Q1 2010 cost ATI millions.

The 28nm demo production starts this year, it should be ready shortly and we are quite sure that next generation ATI gets developed in both TSMC and Global Foundries and the winner will get more business. Nvidia’s 28nm is TSMC only and this remains for the time being. However, if Global Foundries do a good job on ATI’s 28nm chips, then Nvidia might turn to them.

In late 2010 ATI will introduce its 40nm tweaked Radeon HD 6000 generation while Nvidia comes up with its GF104 based on similar chips and the rest of 2010 and first part of 2011 is exclusive for 40nm and nothing smaller, at least in graphics.

GloFo's 32nm was scheduled to enter risk production in early Q3'2010. And Llano will start shipping in Q1'2011.

GloFo's 28nm is scheduled to enter risk production in early Q4'2010. So by the same rationale, ATI could launch 28nm GPUs in Q2'2011… provided they can finish the design in time, of course.

I wouldn't bet too much on TMSC's ability to do the same, however.

Anyone know when GloFo will have High-K technology available? I've read about it some months ago, but now it seems noone talks about it...

Right now they are upgrading... mass production coming 32nm has HKMG for both SOI and bulk processes.

Last I heard, GloFo had no 32nm bulk process planned, but their 28nm bulk process is indeed HK/MG, and so is their 32nm SOI one.

GloFo's 32nm SOI process has encountered difficulties, as disclosed on AMD's recent earnings call.

All that is now promised for Llano, per the CEO, is shipments in the first HALF of 2011, not the first quarter.

My bad... you're right. I had to re-check my news sources, they scraped 32 and went 28nm instead.

Let just hope they don't increase the size of the graphic card too much or anymore than it already is.

I think Nvidia will never turn to GloFo, last I read they say they are already satisfied with TSMC, and other reasons like pride.

who cares when ati comes out with 28nm you can't even imagine the speed increase from 40nm. if nvidia took their original GF100 chips to 28nm maybe it would have enough low power and oc room to kick some butt after all so why wouldn't they go to global foundries once they are established. they wanna tape out as many cards as possible if its selling no matter who makes em.

You don't say!... the reason GF100 is a flop is because of their 40nm layout. It's hot and needs lots of power because it is faulty. What do you think will happen to a broken chip when it gets shrunken to 28nm? You're right, some managers will kick some engineers butt, TWIMTKB style.
